AFTERCARE.
BANDAGES.
We use adhesive bandages on most tattoos. Exceptions can be made when clients have allergies or sensitivities to adhesives. We have a product called "Ink Beetle” that is a non-adhesive alternative. Ink Beetle is meant to stay on for 2-24 hours and can either peel off or wash off in the shower. Ideally, the tattoo will stay covered with either the adhesive bandage or Ink Beetle for at least the first night of the tattoo.
HEALING TIME.
The placement, size, and style of tattoo will all be factors in how long your tattoo will take to heal. Generally, 2-3 weeks is a typical healing time. More saturated skin (like dark black, full colour, etc) typically takes a bit longer to heal, compared to thin line work, which generally takes less time to heal. Your artist will provide you with an estimation of how long you should expect your tattoo to heal.
KEY REMINDERS.
*Throughout entire healing process*
Always clean hands immediately before touching the tattooed area.
Avoid prolonged sun exposure directly to the area
Avoid fully submerging in water (showering is fine!)
Avoid saunas and excessive steam
Keep away from pets
Do not scratch or pick at the tattoo while it's healing
Do not put sunscreen directly on the healing tattoo or bandage
FIRST 3 - 5 DAYS.
Avoid a heavy workout / excessive sweating
Keep the bandage on as long as instructed by your artist
Generally the bandage can stay on for 4-5 days, unless instructed otherwise by your artist.
If you notice any irritation or redness around the edges of the bandage, remove it and the redness should subside.
A mix of blood and plasma and even some tattoo ink will likely be visible under the bandage, creating a liquid around the lines and shading. This is completely normal.
REMOVING THE BANDAGE.
In order to remove the adhesive bandage with as little irritation to the skin as possible, start a corner of it and pull away from the tattoo, (along your skin) so it stretches the bandage off your skin. (Similar to removing a 3M Command hook off your wall). You can find a TikTok video demonstrating the proper removal here.
Removing the bandage in the shower can help the process be a little easier.
POST BANDAGE.
Once the bandage is removed, wash & moisturize the tattoo regularly to avoid any infection and make sure our artwork stays looking fabulous!
Use an antibacterial liquid soap with clean hands to wash the area 1-2x daily. Rinse and pat dry with a clean towel or paper towel.
Use a small amount of fragrance free moisturizer to cover the area after washing it, and / or whenever it's feeling particularly dry.
SIGNS OF INFECTION.
Some swelling and redness is normal when the tattoo is fresh, it should subside by the following day. As it heals you should expect the tattooed skin to get dry, flaky, and even itchy. (don’t itch it! - just stick to your cleaning and moisturizing)
If you notice abnormal redness, swelling, heat, puss, or other discolouration, it is recommended to consult with a family physician within 24 hours.
ONGOING CARE.
Once your tattoo is fully healed, the best thing you can do for the longevity of your artwork is sunscreen. Protecting your tattoo from uv rays will help prevent excessive fading / spreading over the years. Some ink migration and fading is normal and expected as a tattoo settles into the skin.
TOUCH UPS.
One complimentary touch up is included with your tattoo (except for hands and feet), if it needs it, and if proper aftercare has been followed. If you are unsure if you need a touchup you can always send your artist a photo. The free touch up must be claimed within the first 6 months from the date of getting the tattoo. It is recommended to wait at least 1-2 months of healing before scheduling the touch up.
The full touch up policy can be found here
